How to Get a Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Card
If you’re considering medical cannabis in Massachusetts, you may be wondering where to start. The process might feel overwhelming at first, but with the right support, it’s simple and straightforward. At ElevateCareNP, our Massachusetts-licensed nurse practitioners are here to guide you every step of the way so you can access the cannabis care you deserve.
Step 1: Get Certified by a Licensed Healthcare Provider
To begin, you’ll need a certification from a registered healthcare provider. In Massachusetts, only MDs, DOs, nurse practitioners (CNPs), and physician assistants (PAs) can certify patients for medical cannabis.
At ElevateCareNP, we provide this certification process conveniently through telemedicine. You can schedule your appointment online at a date and time that works for you. Please note: we do not certify minors, and all of our visits are done virtually (or by phone) for your convenience.
Step 2: Register with the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC)
Once certified, you’ll receive an email with a PIN number and instructions to complete your registration with the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC). Patients can register online (the fastest method) or by mail.
Online applicants can download a temporary pass immediately and begin purchasing medical cannabis.
By mail applicants typically receive their medical marijuana card within 2–3 weeks.
If technology isn’t your thing, don’t worry—we’re happy to help you with the CCC registration process at no additional charge.
Qualifying Conditions
According to Chapter 369 of the Massachusetts General Laws, medical cannabis may be recommended for patients with qualifying conditions, including but not limited to:
Cancer
Glaucoma
HIV/AIDS
Hepatitis C
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Crohn’s disease
Parkinson’s disease
Multiple sclerosis
If your healthcare provider determines the potential benefits outweigh the risks, you may qualify for certification.
What to Bring to the Dispensary
When visiting a Massachusetts medical marijuana treatment center, you’ll need:
Your medical marijuana registration card (or temporary pass).
A valid government-issued photo ID
Dispensaries will verify your registration in the state database before allowing purchases.
Renewing Your Card
Massachusetts medical marijuana cards are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Renewal is simple: schedule another visit with a certifying healthcare provider then log in to your CCC account to renew your registration.
Additional Benefits of a Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Card
Even though recreational cannabis is legal in Massachusetts, having a medical card comes with extra advantages:
No taxes on medical cannabis purchases
Priority access at dispensaries
Larger possession limits (up to a 60-day supply or 10 ounces)
Higher cultivation limits (up to 12 mature and 12 immature plants for personal use)
Reciprocity in some states like Rhode Island and Maine
Caregivers and Cultivation
Medical marijuana patients may also designate up to two caregivers to assist with purchasing or cultivating cannabis. Additionally, patients who qualify for hardship cultivation can apply to grow a 60-day supply at home, provided cultivation areas are secured and not visible from public spaces.
Privacy and Insurance
All medical marijuana records are protected under HIPAA. Your information remains private, and no employer or third party can access your medical cannabis records without your consent, except under specific legal circumstances.
It’s important to note that insurance typically does not cover medical cannabis expenses in Massachusetts.
